This topic may be of interest to others and keeping it in my blog or handling through PM's seemed to be too limiting. If there are other questions, suggestions, or comments, please feel free to post them here.

In my blog, I posted the following

... And just to further spread myself thin, I just upgraded my PreSonus software to Studio One 6 Artist. As a result, I'll probably be asking @ABitRusty some questions as I've not yet learned the software very much! And for the first one, what dB level to you normally record? I'm using a Shure SM57 through a FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen pre-amp.

Greg's answer was as follows:

if looking at the DAW channel in presonus, around -24 to -12.its not an exact science.  turn gain on interface to 10:00 and bow something while watching level and adjust somewhere below mid level on your daw input channel.. The main Channel on the far right comes later.

On my interface the left stereo channel was hooked to a small condenser mic and 48v phantom power was on. the physical real world gain knob i can turn with fingers was about 11:00-ish.

On the interface...my right channel was hooked to another device made by se electronics and is called dynamite  THAT device was plugged straight into the bottom of my ribbon mic.   The dynamite is an inline booster.   i use it on the ribbon and dynamic mics.   This allows me to turn on phantom power and use less gain provided by that real world knob on the interface. without it my interface knkb would be around 3:00 to 4:00 and i probably would hear some shhhhh from input circuitry.   The humidifier running in background is already annoyinv enough.

one thing to remember is the signal will be there in the daw even if you record it at -30 or something.   you can always boost it INSIDE the daw software

you cant reverse too much gain which can cause clipping.

Using Greg's suggestions, I was able to record the following. Thank you!

Now I just have to learn and trim since the actual playing is only about a minute, not 5!

@JohnG i struggled answering in your blog because it could get into a "thing"  so glad you moved discussion.  i can delete the other if needed.

Your recording is great!

By default presonus exports between the start and end markers the length of which is also a default.  probably 5:00 ...  you can move both the start and end markers

this shows you where they are... the rest is nice to know stuff maybe not related.  i only use the START and END.   if you cant find the END marker...well its all the way to the right at the end of the session..

Thanks @ABitRusty! I figured it was easy, and now I know. Probably the next thing to work on is tone adjustment. As recorded, seems a little "tinny".

i dont think so..  sounded great.

this isnt important now but im gonna place it here so you can find later.   itll tell you all about levels and the main channel meter.   If you didnt watch it whatever you did to get output was about right.   not too loud of quiet.  The video is just for reference.

JohnG,

Your recording sounds good.

Thank you for starting this thread, I had been wondering what folks were using to record with.

ABitRusty,

Thanks for the responses to JohnG, too many irons in the fire to even think about jumping into this rabbit hole at the moment, but for future reference it will be a great help.

Thank you Mark

Master the Frog and you have mastered the bow.

Okay, tried some EQ and reverberation. Here is the original recording (from earlier post) and then the revised version. First does anyone hear the difference and then, which is "better"? I used the Pro EQ and Room Reverb from Presonus.

I can hear the reverb tail on 2nd one.   I tend to favor a bit of reverb if you havent figured out 🙄  so liking the 2nd.  And you didnt over do it either so good there.  I can get carried away with it sometimes.

any fun with it or more of a hassel?

@ABitRusty - Thanks for the feedback! Seems to be working a bit better for me as I'm actually figured out to how add the FX to the appropriate channel and I learned how to correct clipping using the EQ. Another lifetime or two and I may master it! lol

Got some interesting info on fixing crackles and pops when recording or listening in Presonus Studio One. I had found similar info when using Studio One 5 when I first installed it but forgot where and what I found.

@JohnG -

THANK YOU!

Really appreciate the great find!

I don't think I'll have any issues with my Alienware, but I would rather learn about it now & keep potential problems to a minimum when my Mini amp arrives.
