This is my first video with the Socially Distanced Orchestra, a completely virtual ensemble created during the pandemic. I'm at bottom center.

We played an excerpt from the first movement of Florence Price's 1st Symphony. (It's the exposition, then a jump to the very end of the movement.)

EDIT: got the YouTube link, so I can embed it now.

Really nice Andrew. Never heard this Symphony before. Maybe in the current social situation, more of these works will be coming forward.

Thanks for sharing.

AndrewH

Like Bob I'm unfamiliar with the symphony, but I enjoyed listing to it.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks, all.

This was actually not the first time I've played orchestral music by Florence Price. There has been a huge revival of interest in her music recently, because of the rediscovery of several major works that she composed close to the end of her life. She died suddenly and unexpectedly in 1953, and her unpublished manuscripts were misplaced during the administration of her estate. They were rediscovered in 2009, in an abandoned house being opened up for renovation that had once been Price's vacation home. It took some time to sort through and edit those manuscripts for performance and publication, so a whole bunch of pieces got their first performances in the years 2017 through 2019. In February 2019, the Camellia Symphony Orchestra (the orchestra I play in regularly) performed Price's Violin Concerto No. 2, which was one of those pieces composed in the last year of Price's life and lost before being published or performed. Our soloist, who flew in from Arkansas, was the editor of the newly published edition. She was also the violinist who made the first recording in 2017 and gave the first-ever live performance in 2018. Our performance was only the fourth ever!

I've never heard of Florence Price, but that sounded really good. I'm assuming everyone's been playing for quite some time.

It's easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself. Johann S.Bach

AndrewH,

That was wonderful.  Thank you for this—both your performance and the background on Price.  I’m going to look up more about her music.

This one was recorded more than a month after the GoT video. The Socially Distant Orchestra started in March, but I didn't get in on it until June, and I recorded my part for this one in early July.

That said, the GoT video was my third during the pandemic; if I remember correctly I recorded my first three in the space of less than two weeks.
