Barry, that's exactly what I want to do. I learn all my piano pieces to memory, then add some emotion. I'm so in awe of great violinists and fiddlers who seem to add 'thought' (for want of a better word) to the music. Or should that be 'thoughtfulness', or maybe 'ESP' ??? Whatever it is, it makes the instrument tell a story that is meaningful.
... and all those other emoticons that might or might not say how I feel ...
If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

Ok kids, a little constructive criticism. Nothing personal... Just trying to help ya here. Robyn, you don't look happy. Try smiling a bit and stay relaxed. I think you may be surprised how much that helps with your playing. And David....Get that wrist straight with your forearm
Thank's for sharing you two! I think you both should get down and dirty with your left hand positions and scales for your ear training. I'm just saying... I'm a beginner too and posted just a photo of me caught in the act playing my violin and fiddlerman made some great pointers that I am fixing. I was getting too tired practicing too long and not focusing on proper techniques. I'll get some videos of me up real soon and please be honest about me too

Thanks for your honesty, and yes I know I'm not relaxed. I'm still working towards the confidence to play with a more relaxed body and maybe even a smile.
I can't wait to start picking on you too ... and others as well I hope ... (just kidding, I would never put sh*t on others' efforts ... well, maybe just a little) ...

I look like Quasimodo playing. I keep trying to stand up straight and get that left elbow under the violin. That will help me straighten my wrist. Thanks for the help. I need all I can get. I know I should be working scales in the different keys...but it is so much more fun to try to attack songs. I may not sound to good, but I will get there.

I have been working on this one for a while.

Update. I re-encoded the video at 512kbps and changed it with the original on you tube. The audio is a little better, not as wobbly. All the squawking and squealing you hear now is all me!

Dave, you did a great job. How long have you been working on that piece?
Here's this I found about how to stand when playing. It might be helpful.
"Balance is the key to good posture and position. In a standing position, the feet are spread, outlining a slight "V" shape. The left foot is slid forward to establish a shoulder width stance." I noticed your feet seemed to be in line with each other. "This allows freedom to rock obliquely from side to side with flexible knees, thereby avoiding stiffness and excessive tension. This stance will allow for natural movement during performance."
Hope that helps. Oh, and remember, don't lock your knees or you may end up fainting. I saw it happen first hand when I was in choir.

MGN ... I for one was not offended. The only reason I put up videos was to attract constructive critique. That's what I got, so thank you.
I'm glad I'm not the only one, thanks Dave for being brave enough to join me. I like to watch your videos, you get A for effort. Your right arm looks like it's doing all the right things and your bowing looks straight. The left elbow doesn't move, maybe it should, you can try that one with scale practise. But you have long fingers, so maybe you don't need to move the elbow a lot.
If I am wrong, can someone please correct me?

I wouldn't be offended either, the video post is supposed to welcome critiques --
-ve and +ve. However, I'm not as brave as Robyn and David. I'm trying, maybe in a few days I will post mine:). i have to learn how to upload a video as well.
David, one thing my daughter's teacher told her to do is: when you're playing, your scroll should be as high as your nose, that may help you to stand up straight. My daughter seems to have a lazy left arm that after a few strokes the scroll is already pointing toward the floor.
I also noticed that when you are playing G and maybe D string, you tend to lean down so your bow hand could reach. I have seen people rocking while playing but I don't know if that affect your posture or not.
Robin, I think you just need to practice more. Try do it slower, especially the campbell piece.
I need courage!!!!

One thing I have learned is we have to get our discipline down. The fiddle is one hard instrument to learn. Way to go Robyn for sharing that. This forum is really turning into a wonderful place for us that love the violin. It's 10:30 PM my time right now and I'm going to log off and practice. Love you all!

You're absolutely right, we're all learning, even the experienced among us. And it's damned hard at times.
I'm so happy that people are willing to be honest and at the same time very helpful.
