Thanks for watching mouse, prob the best Irish trad tune I have done, (on fiddle) mainly because I didnt follĺow the rules, lol ,few mistakes, but thats how I used to play it on banjo in session.)

Lot harder on fiddle, but thats more how its supposed to sound, rather than put cuts and rolls where they are SUPPOSED to go,;) which always makes me laugh.

Exactly Mark, thanks for taking a look, makes me really laugh when people think there are some kind of rules to follow for Irish music, I have even headd danny boy played as a jig in a pub in limerick, very amusing everyone was dancing about a little bit merry, if you know what I mean;)

@stringy Neat tune!

One of the reasons I like pulling a fiddle tune off the Session is because it's listed there in a very plain form--I usually don't listen to a version of it (if I don't know it--which would be most of the time smile) until after I try to play it.  I think I always sound different than what I hear the real fiddlers play--So, I think I always break the rules.violin-bang

Sharon if you sound differènt to what the real fiddlers play, you are a real fiddler;)

I picked this one up listening to a banjo player live, by ear, then when you play it back its inevitable some things are slightly different, thats why there are so many variations of Irish tunes, as well as so many names. One of the things I love about fiddle, tunes, they evolve. put the cuts and rolls and such where you think they sound good and you cant go wrong.

Thanks for listening and the comment:)

@stringy - I'm feeling way more fluency in your playing. Great job!

Thanks for taking a listen greg, and for the kind comment.

Fiddlerman, I am getting a bit more smooth, extremely slow process though, and sometimes I think why bother.

20220816_165355.jpgImage EnlargerThanks Katie, only just got back tonight from Vienna again, I love that city full of music, but a bit depressing as well, inasmuch as the very fine violinists you find everywhere there, make you feel very inferior.

I was in the Stadhtpark by the statue of Strauss, the other afternoon, and there was a kid of about 7, wth her mam sat on the grass young girl, playing things I could only dream of playing right up to the highest positions on violin never heard anything like it, brilliant style intonation double stops, you name it she could do it and she isnt the only one like that over there, the city is music, and all the people in it. I have heard buskers there that wouldnt be out of place on the london paladium.

Makes you feel like giving up. Sorry to be depressive

youre welcome..thought it was really good.

and dont compare how you play to anyone else and get down on yourself about it.  we are where we are and each has their own "stuff" that contributes to how much practice and what we are able to do.  That 7 year old doesnt have to pay rent or mortgage and all the adult stuff either.  and probably doesnt have back or shoulder issues that get in the way either.

@stringy -

I like how you are coming along, but if you aren't happy with just fiddling around with tunes (like I am), why not seek out the best teacher you can afford - one that will not only challenge you, but will also help you achieve your goals faster by immediately addressing your concerns?

Would even be worth a few hours of driving, if you find someone you not only admire playing, but is also a great teacher.

...covid is not an excuse anymore. 🤗

Btw, I don't believe finding a great local teacher is any easy task.  I would prepare for this to be an extremely frustrating endeavor in itself.

All I can say is Fiddle Hell workshops have been a huge help for me - it's been wonderful to have interactive help from so many great teachers, especially since questions are answered immediately when they arise, plus 4 months of reviewing lessons afterwards.  Some were learning style/phrasing characteristics for different genre of tunes, but also; bowing techniques, rhythms, and music theory.  They have kept me busy, for now - and I have a short list of who I want to take lessons from when I'm better at what I've learned.

Is there any possible way to get better internet service?  I'd recommend zoom lessons - to pick from wonderful teachers around the World.

Wow how amazing to go to Vienna. . Just being able to go to Vienna would be amazing ! Also I agree with abitrusty, I often see videos of violinists I just laugh sometimes but I think well I only started two years ago .. I think you are the last person who should be down about your playing . Love the Strauss pic !

Greg, you are of course quite correct in what you say, and thanks for taking the time to give a bit of advice, the kid will probably have a great teacher being from there, she is most likely in some form of academy as well. You are also right about not comparing with anyone else, its a bad habit to get into. My major problem is that my ears have developed to the point where I really can hear all the bad stuff, but cant do anything about it, which is why many times I will post a vid and delete it after I have listened to it again a few hours later.

Katie, vienna is wonderful, I would like to live there, most beautiful city in Europe, even more beautiful than florence or Rome,. I have been there many times and feel at home in the place, I almost cry when I have to leave and get very depressed, I love the Austrian people and their culture, at this time of year they have a massive outdoor free cinema in front of the Rathaus in the park and lots of stalls selling food and Ottakringer beer, music goes on all over the city. And there are all kinds of things happening.

Emily thats very good advice, I have beenthinking of a teacher for a while, as you say though, it is very very difficult to get a teacher near me. who is taking students.

Believe itor not, I did actually find one, less than a mile from where I live, a young girl who had played for Kanye west, and I was about to start lessons wih her when she changed her mind and said she had too many students. I am going to start looking again though. I need help wit a lot of things, starting with posture, which I know is wrong and is contribuing to  my bad back, repetitive strain. for one thing, but there are lots of things that need addressing.
