Brainstorm Idea for a Project
I thought about one thing we could do for a project, but it's a bit vague. I need others' input to see if it's a good idea, and how many people would do it.

Would it be a good idea to do a Disney song as a project, sometime in the future? There are some songs that I believe would probably be good. However, I'm not sure about the copyright issues, if that would be the roadblock to a project such as this.

I was thinking maybe some old hit songs as well. New ones to add to it.

I was also thinking of maybe famous opera songs that everyone knows (Something like Habanera from Carmen).

Or, if possible, maybe compositions from fiddlerman forum members who compose. Just a thought

Yeah, I am considering making sheet music for anyone of these ideas. Let me know your thoughts on this as well as what you would want to see being done as a future project, and when it gets to a certain point, I'll probably post sheet music that I make of it.

Good idea @Elwin

And @Fiddlerman - for any future projects a few other things that may be worthwhile considering are -

(1) "make the choice" early - giving it a long-lead-time ( I know, the Game of Thrones project DID have a long time - unintended and for other reasons - and although the project was greeted enthusiastically by many when launched, in the end it still did not have significant an enough participation for it to be mixed down. The GOT project is of course still open for submissions ! )

(2) Consider "simple" arrangements to draw more beginners in to submitting parts.  When I say "simple" I mean on a part-by part basis - but there could be more (still simple) parts added - which when all mixed down leads to an overall "more complex sounding piece".  It may also bring more multiple-parts submissions into the mix - it means more effort by the arranger of course.

(3) Personally I absolutely hate to say this - but possibly consider transposing pieces to one of the "simpler keys" for beginners to use ( G, D, A - then possibly C ).  I'm not sure about it - it's just a suggestion.  ( I do that with various tunes all the time myself, basically just for fun and to draw a bit more excitement into scales practice - but it does make it sound different..  hard call to make... but you do see a lot of comments like "oh - it's got 3 flats - I/we haven't covered this yet...")

(4) Related to (3) - again for those thrown by the presence of accidentals in the score itself regardless of key - perhaps consider pieces with only the occasional excursion-by-accidental from the key signature.

(5) Once a project decision is made, perhaps consider making the forum thread "sticky" so it ALWAYS appears if possible at the top of the "Recent Forum Posts" list - I know a lot of members are, unlike myself, not necessarily daily visitors, and topics can become 'forgotten about'.   If making a post sticky cant be done, perhaps place it in a separate side-bar widget in a similar way the chat, poll and FiddlerShop widgets appear...   I appreciate the project links are usually on the home page - but I'm sure there are many, who like me, log-in directly to the forum page.   I rarely visit the home page unless I'm searching for one of Pierre's tutorial videos.

Anyway - these were just some thoughts having seen both the participation levels and general comments made on the last 6 or so projects, in a hope to bring more folks, especially beginners, into the projects...

EDIT : To highlight my point about the "Home Page" limitations (well, I was searching for a word - there's nothing wrong with the home-page - but read on ) - for instance ( a non-member ) just googling "Game of thrones fiddle" - will come across a link (it came up as 3rd from the top here) to Fiddlerman Group Project - Game Of Thrones | LEARN TO PLAY THE ...

which of course takes them directly to the forum thread - and obviously NOT to the FiddlerMan home page....  a "sticky post" somewhere more "permanent and obvious" may attract more members....

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

Please make your own, different mistakes, and help us all learn :-)

(1) I did desire some input in order to make the choice, which is why I posted it here.

(2) I do know about the part-by-part simplicity. I intended quite a bit of violin parts, a few of them will be simple, not as much, maybe two or three viola parts with only one of them being simple. and a cello part.

(3) I am aware of the beginner easy keys. I was in band for a while, so I at least know the keys that were easy, and what weren't. For strings it's different. What I do think is that at least for beginners (this was my conclusion) keys that require half-position, most of the time should probably be avoided. I think the key of C might be easier for the viola than for the violin.

(4) I will consider leaving the accidentals on the advanced parts.

(5) Thanks for letting me know.

I was thinking for a group project, Funiculi Funicula might be a good idea. I do need to ask about if copyright would be a roadblock to any project.

The CTEA amended the Copyright Act by extending the term of protection for works currently in their renewal term from 75 years to 95 years. Under the new law, any work published in 1923 (which would have otherwise fallen into the public domain on January 1, 1999), will now be protected until January 1, 2019.

Copyright protection outside the USA is determined by the laws of the country where you wish to use a work. Copyright protection may be 50 to 70 years after the death of the last surviving author, 95 years from publication date, or other copyright protection term.

So, Funiculi Funicula was composed in 1880 by Luigi Denza and is most likely public domain.

Thanks Fiddlerman.

Now, are we allowed to do a group project on non-public domain works. Have you done so in the past? How did you acquire permission to do so?

I have an idea for a possible song, I don't expect this to make it for obvious reasons.

No, before you make assumptions, I am not an old person :)

I was thinking Ma-na Ma-na, from the muppets. Hilariously, the song is quite simple, only one violinist has to take the solo part, and simple parts could be created.

Maybe I'm old because I don't think of that as an old song, hahaha.

I love the idea of that song, though. It has a fun amount of cheesiness to it, haha.

Yeah, it would actually be fun. I was playing it by ear the other day and then my little brother knocks on my door and asks "Are you playing mana mana?"

The question is, would it attract submissions from other members?

Funny you should suggest that. One day one of us (could have been me) started to say/sing Manamana over and over here in the office. Instruments got grabbed and one thing led to another which turned into a fun/funny jam session. Afterwards we talked about making a funny video which of course never happened. :)

Ha Ha Ha, I sometimes randomly sing that over where I go to school (some of my classmates actually remember it). I actually do think it would make a funny group project.

That being said, should I go ahead and make sheet music for a possible group project?

Looks like you had some interest in this @Elwin - and I am interested also (although I did not chime in at the time).

Hope to hear something on a group project for this soon! smile

I am open to a new project.  I still would want others to consider Games of Thrones again.

My thoughts on the group projects.  When I started, the first year, I didn't do projects. I didn't understand the basics enough.  Even if it was play the whole note four beats for the whole song.  I got talked into that one project... the name escapes me... it ended up being last minute and fun.

Later I was up for Thaxcted.  I loved that project because for me it was really hard.  It took me a long time but I learned a lot.

If we have any projects.   I know we don't need tutorials for all the parts.  I suggest that for the very very easy parts that there are helpful videos for the new violinists.  Even if we have to help each other.

Many of the projects for me were completed because @BillyG helped me out with some Musescore.

Excited to hear of project talks.  I am not a muppet watcher so I don't know what song everyone is talking about.  Hahha.. I know... on what planet do I live.   :)

I have been slacking off when concerning the projects. A bit because the interest did not meet up to participation but also because I'm extremely busy. However, I'm happy to work on one provided the mixing need not be rushed. :)

I love participating, and will when ever I can. I have been having a hard time practicing as of late and find many of the scores a bit beyond my reach. I still have Game of Thrones on my music stand and someday maybe...

I have also been having computer issues which I hope to have resolved soon with the arrival of a new PC.

I always appreciate all the hard work put into the projects. look forward to joining in again.

Have you considered any of the scores from Lord of the Rings/Hobbitt movies?

thanks again

Hey, guys, I've been making the sheet music for Mahna Mahna. Here's how I'm arranging it.

One solo violin part, and then two other violin parts, that play the same part, just one plays up an octave. The Solo part is basically the "Mahna Mahna" guy, while the two other violin parts are the "Snowths". BTW, the two pink puppets that have their lips in a circle shape that accompany the "Mahna Mahna" guy are called Snowths. I also have a viola part and a cello part that are optional (They may or may not become violin 3 and 4) that play the background accompaniment (what you'd hear if you listen to the muppet's Mahna Mahna). I might add in rhythm instruments. The bottom line though, the piece could be performed with just the violin parts. I was thinking Pierre could take the solo part. Warning: I altered some notes to incorporate a "swing effect" so the rhythms might be confusing at first.

Working on it. I just need to transcribe the part where, that muppet starts scatting randomly.
