Since I'm new here and considering giving this a whirl, I have a few questions. Do you just tape your performance with a standard video camera and upload it? Do you need a mike or other "stuff" to get the sound or just play as is and tape yourself? I have Friday off from work and no one is home so I'll be playing with the camcorder and wanted to know. Plus I can start posting videos of my progress.
What format do you prefer? I have a mac so generally anything I do is quicktime but I think there are other formats.
Other general hints, tips on taping, uploading would help too.

No worries. Everything is TOO easy! To answer your questions:
Yes, you can simply record yourself with any video camera. Some folks have even used their smartphones before (not the best quality, but it works).
No, you do not need a mic. You CAN try to record the audio separate, and some do, but it isn't usually necessary to do so.
As for format, it doesn't matter to me. The program I use takes it all, and will render the final product in whichever format I decide (which will probably be Quicktime's format because YouTube likes it the most).
As far as uploading it...When the time comes, I will post my email address here, and you can email it to me using one of several different websites. We've used sprend.com and filestofriends.com in the past. These both allow you to email large files that standard email accounts won't typically allow and do not require you to "sign-up." Absolutely worst case scenario, you post your file to YouTube, and I rip if from there, with your permission as to remain legal and all that.
I hope that helps. Also, there is a thread here in the forum that is dedicated to recording ideas, tips, techniques, etc: https://fiddlerman.com/forum/r.....he-violin/. Let us know if you have ANY other questions!

That's pretty much up to everyone else! So far, we've got 4 people who have committed to the project, which is more than enough. Right now I'm kinda waiting to at least get through the weekend and see if anyone else is going to jump on board.
The BIGGEST problem is music selection. I've found a website that has several possibles, but once everyone has seen this thread, or at least had the chance to see it, I will probably make a selection, and we will go with it. I HATE to dictate the music, but I think we could go rounds trying to decide on pieces if we try to do it democratically.
Anyways...4 Nov, I will post the music. I can't tell you yet if everyone will have to purchase their own or if I will be able to find it for free. Free is always preferable, but not always legal. So, I know that doesn't really answer your question, but I can tell you that BY 4 NOV, the selection will be made, and we will go from there!
We will probably be looking at a turn-in deadline in mid-December. In theory, that will give everyone at least four weeks to learn the pieces, and record them, and give me a little under a week to finalize the project and get to everyone in time for the holidays. That being said....

Does anyone have any objections to any particular type of holiday music? i.e. if we play a Christmas or Hannakah song, will that immediately put you out? Should just focus on "winter" music?
- Doesn't matter to me.
- I will ONLY play music based on my set of religious beliefs.
- I will NOT play music from one particular religion.
- I will NOT play religiously affiliated music. Winter theme ONLY!

Sounds good to me. Since this is my first attempt to challenge myself, I'm still learning how this all works. I figure if I push myself a little it's an incentive to stretch and do something. You can't learn if you don't try.

You will see that adding a deadline to something will motivate you to learn it, and learn it well. I find it VERY helpful in my development.

Alright everybody, its been decided. After much searching, and even some experimental purchasing, I have decided on the music we will be playing for the recital!!!
We will be playing two titles from the Hal Leonard's Christmas Favorites for Strings book. We will be playing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas," and "Frosty The Snow Man," straight from the book. Due to copyright laws, etc, you will have to purchase the music from any source you'd like if you want to participate. Here's a link to Hal Leonard's Website, detailing the book: http://www.halleonard.com/prod.....5&
Again, feel free to purchase the book from any source you'd like. We will be playing the orchestra arrangement, so make sure you learn that part, not the soloist part. That being said, if you would like to contribute ANY Holiday solo, it will be included in the final project!
I hope that all of you will chose to participate!
That being said, I don't want to "assign" parts, so I will let everyone decide for themselves which part they would like to play. The book includes Violins 1 & 2!

"Frosty" is at 120 BPM in the Key of C, "We Wish" is at 112 BPM in the Key of G. Here is a link to the "Click Tracks" for each song and part:

First, welcome! The more the merrier! And yes, I'm looking to have everyone's videos to me by 1 December. That will give me enough time to finalize the project and get it posted well before the end of Hanukkah and Christmas. If no one plans on doing a solo Hanukkah song, we will push it back, but I want everyone to have the opportunity.
That being said, if anyone would like to do a solo, duet, anything in honor of Hanukkah, please come up early so we can all plan accordingly.
Additionally, if anyone would like to do a solo, duet, I think I've already mentioned it, but that will only add to the project! I've ordered the CD with the background music for anyone that wants to do a solo from the same book. Let me know, and I'll get you the music to practice off of so your timing is down
Again, anyone doing a solo, duet, let me know early please so we don't have ten Rudolph solos. Maybe if you just "claim" it by posting your "dibs" here in the thread, everyone will know what songs are being played and which ones are not. Thanks all, and good luck. If you're having issues, come up early so we can help
