I want to buy a new bow, about £100 -£200 and I can see plenty on-line...I was thinking of a carbon fibre bow.

I live in rural Wales, UK and can't easily get to a violin or bow shop (more than 2 hours away driving) so need to get one on-line.

I've worn out a Glasser carbon fibre bow and another one that I've forgotten the name of.....Does anybody have any recommendations?

Thanks,

Jan

I think i would stick with the glasser bows if theyre available to you.  Carbon fiber with horsehair... not fiberglass

if you can get a fiddlerman carbon fiber there id say thats the way to go.

this all based on the price range you listed.

@Jan Howard -

Welcome to the forum!

I have no idea how much it costs to ship a bow from the USA to Wales, but I'd contact the Fiddlershop & ask about shipping on one of their CF bows, in your specified price range  ('Violin Shop' link also at the top of the page).

I like the Fiddlerman bows.  I'm using the new Fiddlerman 'Noir' bow right now - while I'm getting my much more expensive bow re-haired.

It might help to know what your style of playing is, what kind of music you play.

If you live anywhere near Rhyll look up Michael Phoenix he is a luthier and has a shop around there and one in Liverpool, I bought my fiddle from him, and recently a Musing c3 violin bow, carbon weave which is excellent but a bit above your price range. He would have something in your pricing in his shop but would advise you as well, he is very trustworthy and very scouse.

If your bow at the moment isn't broken I would consider hanging on and saving up as you will only want something better than the 1 to 200 range within 6 months

I have a Fiddlerman carbon fiber weave bow and a Fiddlerman Hybrid bow.  I love them both, but currently smitten with the hybrid bow.  You definitely want carbon fiber vs. fiberglass.  I would also agree Fiddlerman is the way to go!

When you say worn out, that might mean different things. It costs up to £80 to rehair a bow in the UK, so if your bow is worth significantly more than that, you should get it rehaired.

The last bow I bought in your price range was the Col Legno Standard, which was very good. In fact the shop told me the Col Legno Deluxe wasn't worth the extra money when I tried to order one from them.

Fiddlerman's shipping to the UK is about $77 for a bow (or it was a few years ago when I last contemplated a FM bow - you can verify it by putting it in your basket and doing a partial checkout), so it's not really cost effective for Brits to buy cheap bows from him. If you want to buy mail order on an approval scheme, then it gets more interesting, as buying in the UK may or may not cost time and money, whereas Fiddlerman used to approve personally every bow he sold. Otoh, that may have been in the days before he sold 10,000 bows a year!

An increasing number of shops offer the option of shipping your bow to them to be rehaired, so if your bow just needs a rehair, distance is much less of an obstacle than it used to be.
