On cheaper instruments they  tend not to put in top quality craftsmanship. That said, its quite possible you have an improper soundpost length. I dont know if you ordered the gauge, but its a great tool.

Since you like to do your own work, like many of us here do, you should order you a couple cheap bridge blanks also and learn to "cut" your own. Which basically involves shaping the feet, cutting the correct height for your violin and thinning it down to produce the best tone. The single best improvement to a lower end fiddle is a properly dressed bridge. Some will tell you quality strings is what matters most, but a $150 set of strings will still produce a thin, nasally sound on a thick bridge.

let the madness begin and welcome to the fun and sometimes frustrating, but always challenging world of Violin

I'll make a video on how to properly measure and cut a sound post after my arrival from our Italy vacation. I'll show you a much easier and more accurate way to measure and cut a post.

Barry,

Thanks for the video, and the information on the bridge, I hope to maybe work with my bridge next. I have ordered the sound post sticks, and the tools needed to do the job correctly from Fiddlerman Shop. I hope to get them by mid week.
