I probably only tried 10 violins and went to a few shops and I found this one intriguing. Part of it was because it was a mystery and it is clearly really nicely made. It didn't cost me much more than a standard student violin (the first shop I looked at had Eastmans and Yamahas for 550; this sounds quite a bit better than those did)

The bow is unmarked and is not original than the violin. They said the violin is between 8-20 yrs old. (but its in beautiful shape) The bow seems nicely made but it is very heavy compared to my black carbon fiber.

Very nice, Katka. It is nice when you find one you really like.

Nice. Superficial of me, but I do like ornamental pegs!

Is the bow heavier or just badly balanced?

If it's heavier, could they have given you a viola bow by mistake?

1 piece back, good flaming, what appears to be an actual ebony tailpiece = not a "student" violin to me.

The bow weighs 64 grams and my carbon fiber weighs 59 grams. (I have small hands and prefer the feel of the lighter carbon fiber) I think that's within the weight of a violin bow.

It doesn't seem poorly balanced but I'm still a beginner but I'm not sure.

Admittedly, I love the pegs too, they are beautiful. (but also nice feeling...in fact it appears that the pegs, finger board, tail piece and chinrest are all solid ebony; a nice change from my cheap VSO)

I paid about $700 for it so a bit more than the student violins.

I like ornamental pegs, too. what is it about them?

Good question about the bow.

Is the frog end a right angle at the corner, or is it a rounded corner? A viola bow has a rounded corner and is a little shorter than a violin bow. A violin bow is a right angle at the frog end.

Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong. I have been given information before that I have taken as fact, but it was a lot generalities, not exact fact. So, I am never positive.

It is definitely a 90 degree angle! Just a heavy bow I suppose. (64 grams)

64g does seem heavy, but also 59g is light, so you've been hit by two extremes!

@Katka -

Beautiful!

I can see why you were attracted to it - definitely has a presence!

So glad you can get back playing with a violin you love.

Have a name in mind, yet?

I tend to like the heavier bows.
