I had mentioned this concert in a prior post, but can't find it so I thought I'd just start a new thread with the follow up, for anyone interested.
It was a very good show at Anthology in downtown SD; Sara, her brother Sean, and a basist. Sara has such a sweet voice and, when she plays it, her fiddle playing is so cool. A lot of her new stuff is kind of mellow, whimsical, bluegrass, but on a couple of her older songs, she tore into her fiddle,,, it was soooo cool to hear and watch.
Now the thing that really perplexed me is, I know she plays fiddle/violin,,, but the instrument she played last night looked like it had to be a viola; she's a diminutive girl, but her left arm was outstretched in first position; and the way it was tuned sounded deeper but not quite like a viola,,,, maybe it was a mezzo or tenor violin. I just don't know, but it sounded great.
And the opening group was quite a treat; a group from OR that was surprisingly good; sort of a southern jazz feel; Noah Gundersen and his sister (violinist). You should check 'em out; they were really good.
