@Ripton - it's an XML-formatted file which describes the contents of the score. It is an accepted interchange-format for transferring between different score-writing programs. AFAIK Pierre uses "Finale", and can export the score in that format. I use MuseScore - and - lo and behold - it can import the file from Finale.
.xml is human-readable (it doesn't HAVE to be, but being so allows easy debug if/when necessary).
Here's a tune I'm working on - "Bonnie Lass o Fyvie" - here's the score created by MuseScore -
And here's an extract from the exported xml file - so if someone else wanted to use it - either on MuseScore or some other score writing program I would just send them the .xml file -
