Didn't mean to be confusing.
I should've just said the Gmaj 2-5-1 Chord Progression - it does start with Am, it's: (ii) Am, to (V) Dmaj (I'm liking D/F#, the V⁶ chord a little better), to (I) Gmaj. Feels like I need at least 1 more chord & have a few in mind.
So, if the chords dictate the key - it's Gmaj, but I still think the melody is B Phrygian.
Don't know how to sort this out - they are both the same key signature... I'm sure anyone looking at the key signature would just call it Gmaj & be done with it.
...still have a few more things to check out.

in my experiwlence not really... at least in the irish backing world. it could be partial chords sound the best...ones with no 3rd.. it just really depends on the person and how the mood is. You should juat try different chords and listen. use the key sig and mode knowledge as a GUIDE but dont rule anything out.
