My teacher Had to quit teaching lessons because of taking a job as the manager at a retail store, and with with Christmas Season the hours she's having to work Is is causing problems finding time to teach classes. So i sent her a link to the silent night video and she wanted me to play it an octave higher also. I just put some new Obligato strings on my new fiddle. I've never been wild about it's sound under ear, but it seems to record and sound OK at a distance.

wonderful playing and duet @SharonC ! Youre inspiring me to try a duet Christmas tune for this party. Im going to have to record the main melody first and listen to that when playing the 2nd part. finding real quick the harmony part needs something to anchor me.
@Mark Your violin and playing sound alot more than just ok. enjoyed listening. Those teachers always pushing for more!! great job Mark!
congrats on posting videos fashionandfiddle ! youre sounding really good! And its great to see youre posting vids. the more the merrier as the saying goes 🙂

@Mark Great job on 2 octave Silent Night—strings sound good.
I have Obligatos (with a Jargar E) on my older violin (not “old” as in aged, “old” since I got a newer one in May)—I really like them on it. Different sound on different instruments, though.

@ABitRusty @Mark @ELCBKK Thanks to you all--
@ABitRusty
Do the duet, man! Go for it! I usually use Musescore & listen to both parts at the same time as I play, but I sometimes record the 1st part, & then listen to it while I play the second part—sometimes, it just seems to make more sense that way; maybe the “anchor” that you mention. I play a lot of duets with my teacher—so I’ll practice & play both parts of many things. I think you start to hear a tune differently when you play multiple parts.
@ELCBKK
Thank you—I played this last year with my teacher at a nursing home (a slightly longer version; I shortened it for this recording), but I never played the 1st part until this week. After I recorded both yesterday & was putting them together, I just wasn’t happy with the 1st part. I went ahead and re-recorded the 1st part. Glad I did.

Just catching up on several missed posts ( again! ) - I'll mention them as I go back through -
@Mark - great stuff man - sounds good, I LIKE the shifting - pretty darned good and the nice extended closing vibrato ! Well done !
@SharonC - nice one ( as ever! ) - tune is ( - well, was until now! ) unknown to me. Very medieval sounding especially with the second voice (to my ear). I liked it ! TY and well done
I *think* I have now caught up with most of the submissions to this party thread, and even if I've missed any, thanks to everyone for taking part ! Cool.
I have a couple of pieces lined-up - just need to get some free time - hopefully tonight or first thing tomorrow.... Out the many I could choose, I'm planning on Adeste Fideles (Oh, Come all ye Faithful) and Ding Dong Merrily on High - the one with the vocally repeated "glo-o-o-o-o-o-o(repeat ad infinitum LOL)... -ria" as it descends down the octave..... LOL it's all about knowing when to stop Hahahahaha...

Fashionandfiddle, really nice playing there.
Mark, playing that an octave higher sounds brilliant, I have been trying to get into doing that but am still struggling on shifting a bit, will get there in he end though.
Sharon something unfortunately gone arong with being able to play your vids again, it worked the other day then I tried to play your second one and it wouldnt work, so I tried the first and now that wont work either, dont know if there is some setting I have accidently turned on, or its just a fault with my tablet, the first one was excellent though.
Katie thanks for the comment, you are always too kind.

@stringy -
Very nice Christmas tune!
Really enjoy listening.
Thank you for sharing it!
I found "Lucy Worsley's 12 Days of Tudor Christmas" on Amazon Prime.
Also, "The First Silent Night" - Simon Callow uncovers the origins of the song.
I really want to find the 2019 "Lucy Worsley's Christmas Carol Odyssey" to watch.
Anyone seen it here in the US?

Finally.....
Here goes with "Adeste Fideles" ( Oh Come all ye Faithful ). I have another couple to come, but they're much simpler than the day it took me to do this.
I took the time out today to do "several" takes of A.F. against a click track (well, the several was actually six in number). A couple or so were - well let's say - not my best.... but 3 of them fitted the overall bar-by-bar timing pretty well.
So, I took the audio from all 3 "good-ish" takes into audacity and mixed them down, along with a backing track (church "pipe-organ") I had rapidly put together.
"Why bother doing that, Bill?" some might ask - well it has always intrigued me why solo violin can be so difficult to "sound right" ( from a hobbyist player's point of view I mean, not a pro player soloist ) - and yes - I do listen to a lot of orchestral music and enjoy it greatly - and I've always felt (well, known) why the sound of a strings section is SO MUCH MORE than that of one person playing ( and I' am not talking about different "harmonised parts" like Vln1, 2, 3, etc - just talking about it in general).
The individual players (not the solo lead naturally) are probably not much better than me. Between each one of several players, all playing the same part, there will be two obvious (and other lesser obvious) differences - being (a) Intonation (generally "close to each other, but NEVER EVER precisely the same" - maybe a few/several cents, randomly spread across the players) and (b) timing - yes overall if the tempo is say 90bpm, yup, they'll all end up "in synch, overall" - BUT - bar by bar and note-by-note there WILL be minor timing differences - maybe the odd 1/10th or so second. I see THESE things as being what gives a string-section (even ALL playing the same part) that greater depth.-of-sound Anyway - always wanted to do this, and I quite like the outcome, I'm happy - it's sort of "proved the point to myself"
Here you go, I enjoyed doing it - and yes - you can hear an occasional intonation and timing issue. Cool - exactly what I expected. Have, say another 3 takes added in, and yes, they will all have similar timing and intonation issues, BUT IN OTHER PLACES - and the final sound of the SIX would be better than the three I did !
