Great Mad_Wed :-) = Bar 23 you go down to 2nd for two bars and bar 25 back to 1st. When you then repeat from the end of bar 36 you should probably shift up to third but you can stay in 1st if you like. The problem is the string crossings. Decide which words best for you. It's individual. I am just as comfortable with all the position's and might have chosen to stretch the 4th finger on the repeat and slide the hand up to play in 2nd for 4 bars. That is maybe too confusing though.

Almost  forgot! Can i join your faery project? How much time do i have since now?

Not only can you join but we would love it if you did. The more the merrier. If anyone knows of any fiddle players of violists that want to join send them over here.cheers

Hey, M-W, We have been practicing with a metronome set between 50 and 60 bpm. However, this is not actually a slow tempo. Each measure is counted as one beat (instead of 3). Does this make sense?

Yes! It makes! Thank you, SaraO!!

I've been practicing already 2 days and could reach only 40 (like in Oliver's 264th post, BTW THANK YOU OLIVER!!!). In a few days more i can get to 50-55 (not perfect playing of course). Then to get to 60 and play still recognisable i will need an extra week i guess. That why i'm kinda nervous. I play also with Fiddlerman's mp3. duncecap If it's 55 and we will choose 60 then i NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THAT NOW. Or i will be late to that projectcrycrycrycry

I plan to be exceptionally imperfect! ;-)

Although, I must admit - I'm less horrified by my playing than I was a night ago. Either I'm improving a little, or my standards are slipping....

Remember that when mixed it will sound like an orchestra. Lot's of violins together won't be like your individual results. It will needless to say, be very interesting.

Yep, Oliver's right. It is played as if there is one beat per measure at 50 bpm. But it's ok if you're really counting 1-2-3 in your head.violin-student

Oliver said:

Don't bet your money but I think that means that a dotted half note (one measure) would equal one beat but we know that it is really 3 beats per measure at 3/4 time signature.  So us regular people would play 50 = 150 beats per minute or a factor 3.   The metronome can be set for 150 bpm and all is well.

I'm sure there is a very good reason for all this confusion but I can't imagine what that is (?)   (Must be a Baroque thing)

coffee2

one question that repeats many others' question:

The tempo is one dotted half note = 1 half note, I got that part.

After practicing several times on the Christmas project this week at 50bpm and when the FM suggested to practice at 60bpm, I tried to switch to 60bpm. Then, remembering what the fiddlerman and Oliver had said, "set the metronome to 150 bpm," that confused me.

Below is my understanding:

If the required tempo is 60bpm, I need to set it at 180 bpm, that means the metronome would beep 3 times for each dotted half note. The time signature would be 3/4.

but if I set it at 4/4 60bpm (since each four bars equals one bar), that means I have 1 beat per measure (d. = 1 quater note) and my metronome would beep once for each dotted half note.

Am I confusing more people or am i making it clearer?

I don't think that you are confusing anyone but If the metronome can be set for 1 @ 60 bpm instead of 4/4 it would make even more sense. If tempo is confusing for anyone just listen to the midi or MP3 files.

thumbs-up

However, if I set it at 4/4 each first note would be emphasized to indicate that it is the first note of each measure (or in this case, it would be the first note of every four measures).

That is why I suggested setting it for 1 instead of 4.

Downloaded all midis and put them together. Compared with "Combo of “Carol of the Bells” & “What child is this” MP3" . Came out that its tempo is approximately 198 (3/4) or 66 bpm duncecap. Are we sure that tempo will not be more then 60 bpm? My right arm doesn't want move that quick yetfacepalm.

I promise. Not faster than 60 and not slower than 50. Hopefully 60 bpm.

I need all of your inputs about this. I don't want to push you guys into a tempo that will not sound good.

Thanks Mad,

  • I'll take that as a 60 bpm from you Mad_Wed.santa3
  • 60 from MGN.
  • 60 from me.
  • I think that I vaguely remember 50 from Oliver.

Who else?????
