For the Rockin Robin Party, I got a tune from the Session website called The Sparrow’s Tail. I made up a 2nd violin part and posted it here: https://fiddlerman.com/forum/p.....n/#p129436
Here it is:
Since then, I went back to the Session, and saw that the person who wrote it (about 15 years ago), Gian Marco Pietrasanta, had posted a video of himself playing the tune on his Overton flute:
And he also posted a German group playing it at an Irish Set Dance (last song of the set ~5:18):
I thought it was interesting to hear the different ways it was played. I think I would have come up with something different for the 2nd violin if I had heard these versions first (I had only listened to the electronic version posted on the Session).
I think it’s important to hear Pro versions of pieces I’m practicing on. But just playing a short tune without doing that beforehand can be a good exercise, too
Characterize people by their actions and you will never be fooled by their words.

@SharonC -
You did great - especially for making up a second voice!
Even though I have Jig & Hornpipe rhythm down, I still try to find an example for slides, because I don't play enough of them. Reels I check too, since they aren't always an even 1, 2, 3, 4 - thank goodness!
Just a note: I have found Gian Marco's notation to be excellent & very reliable, for everything he contributes! I actively search out his settings at thesession.org, when I'm faced with several variations of a tune.
...think the Augusta Ceili Band was playing a little faster than the dancers could handle. 😄 Woo Hoo!
Btw, your arrangement made me think of the Renaissance Festival - loved it!

I thought what you came up with sounded good. It does have a renaissance type feel to it. i think in your post what you did works and sounds good
I agree its good to listen to alot of music in the style wanted to play. Think its really important..
On the other hand sometimes a particular way to play them gets us in a mindset we have to be exactly like what we hear for it to be correct. Theres been several trad type tunes that Ive heard where the artists have taken a nontraditional approach and made some really great music.

Great job! I normally do listen to other people play a tune I’m learning, but it is a fun exercise to learn it on your own and truly bring yourself into the piece.
that said, I need to learn this one, as I have pet house sparrows that love fiddle music, it would be fitting, lol.
