Hi all! I'm posting my first practice video here seeking your input.

I've been paying lots of attention on my posture (holding the bow, elbowing, and left hand fingering) as a newbie, I wanted to get the posture correct before going into other details. Sadly I could not be sitting on a chair or standing while playing so I may look a bit awkward because of my sitting position.

Now I really want to start focusing on making GOOD sound. Mayb my bowing is to gentleviolin-student??

Please comment on my posture/fingers and any other advises on anything to improve at this stage of my playing.

Thank you, xx

still working on how to upload iMovie file here :(

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I'd love to see your video, it seems everyone is too shy to post videos of themselves playing (except Dave and myself).  Nobody will say anything negative, it's all very constructive critique.

I'm hoping to get some more videos online too, and I can't wait for people to comment.

I might add that I'm in Australia, so it's a bit less embarassing for me ... rofl

So go for it, and we will all try to help out, that's why we're here.

Welcome and looking forward to seeing your post!

Robyn, you're right, I'm shy, I'm still trying to figure out how to exclude my face and belly in the video clip LOL, for the face, i probably could use a mask or a paper bag, for the belly, I probably have to angle my camera above it.

First of all, welcome to Fiddlerman.com smile

I would love to know how much of a beginner you are. I was impressed by a lot of things. You definitely have a feeling for getting the best possible sound vs technique as possible. Your intonation is quite good too for just having started playing.

I like your right arm position on all the strings but feel as though your fingers are a little stiff. Please watch my finger flexibility video. It will take a while to get to the point where they are super flexible but you need to start somewhere.

On "Over The Rainbow" I have bow direction indications that would actually aide you in getting a better sound by changing the direction of the bow more often. You should use your bow changes in the same way as if you were to sing this piece and try to phrase. Breathing etc. (I'm getting a little ahead with you but I think you can handle it.) That being said, it's impressive how you can draw such a long bow (especially up bow) with such an even sound so early in the game.

Left hand fourth finger is tough and many beginners avoid the fourth finger but you are doing it right by using it as much as possible.

Thanks for posting. Look forward to many more.dancing

I must have logged in exactly after she posted and she must have removed it before the first reply. I can't find it again either because I watched it embedded in the post. It was real nice.

I am confident Nao will re-post it soon.

I did not see a video, the page kind of froze for a minute and then "Over The Rainbow" played. Kind of like background music. I think that was you, Naosunflower. Your violin sounds very nice. And your notes are very even, not wobbly. It also sounds like you are hitting the notes exactly right. Something I struggle with!

gave up on posting. please use the external link. exhausted LOL

watch me on youtube

thanks everyone for the warm welcomes :)

I succeeded in cutting my face out in the video but had no belly to show.  I might consider growing it until my next upload  cheers  All I can think is "I want to become friends with violin!" and I feel so awesome to find all of you who are already friends with the violin! I bow for your kindness to share your experiences.

not sure why i can't post the video here… I got the video file in mp4 and avi. After uploaded my mp4 file, I tried posting with every player options "HTML5 movie, Quicktime…etc" none worked. So I thought of uploading another file in avi, but then it was denied for uploading. The message said I need permission from admin or something. I did not make mov file because it takes too long to convert. phew. anyhow. I'm sticking with youtube external link for now, it's the easiest for me and it works.

Pierre> I did not know there were bow directions indicated on the sheets!! now I see it, haha. Thank you!!!

I love it !!!!

At some stage you will need to change your bowing directions but at least you're trying to keep the notes correct.  I applaud your efforts.

Bow directions are just for beginners but you chose to be more expressive smile Good job and your "music" was nice to hear.  You handled the intervals well.

Your pinky will work violinnewbee...Just practice with it. It is one heck of a finger to get in tune.

As far as having a short pinky is concerned, try to come under the violin with your left elbow enough to shorten the distance required to reach with a good position. I talk about that in one of my videos but don't remember which. Also the angle of your fingers will be better if you have your elbow more to the right. This will be more difficult to achieve if your violin is too low towards your chest. Make sure it is up and balanced.

Well I wish I'd found a way to cut my head off before I posted videos.  That would've made me feel a lot more comfortable.  But it's too late now.

I'm so glad I'm seeing other people get their movie gear out and sharing with us.  This site is so much fun.
