I just bought a new bow (Delille Hybrid, £240). My old bow is a Col Legno Standard (£140). I like the Col Legno a lot more.
The Delille's sound is a lot less focused and more hissy. My first instinct was that the rosining had to be identical on both before I could judge them fairly. Then I wondered if new bows need to settle.
Very curious. I had been playing the Delille constantly, hoping it would improve, then yesterday I had a lesson and used the Col Legno, but as it was a lesson, I played so badly that I wouldn't have known had the CL been better. Today I gave the Delille a stinking review, then I compared the two bows side by side, and there's no longer any difference. Embarrassing! I deleted the review. I guess the bows are now rosined the same. Possibly the Delille even has a slightly more solid sound than the CL, but not £100's worth - more like a cent's worth! But perhaps its sound will keep developing!
