Boy was walking his dragon and it broke off the leash and ran off, as dragons are prone to do. Later on said dragon returned. so all is well. true story
nice little tune. I havent heard it played much but seems like its normally quick compared to my initial 2 times through. The last time i pick it up some.
I experimented with the chords. It feels like to me except for the B part where the C natural is played and a C chord sounds good.., the chords felt best D and G mostly with an A to D on ending phrase. The first 2 times I fingerpicked and threw in an Am between D and G just to see. sorta gave a sader mood. But does sound a bit off.

LOVE the tune!
...you caught my attention - the chords are unexpected, BRAVO for experimenting!!!
I can pretty much guarantee this tune is in A mixolydian, it's a piper tune - does this help give you ideas?
It's also known as "The 72nd Highlander’s Farewell To Aberdeen" or just "Farewell to Aberdeen", composed by N. Mathieson.
...sorry, my brain needs to get put back in the box & returned at the nearest Kohl's.

@elcbk thanks!
i forced the Am chord in the A part. this tune is in DMaj although with a C natural in a measure of the B part it does have a mixolydian sound there. I think the Cmaj chord works better specific to that measure instead of amaj/min.
Thanks @Mark ! yeah i think its better upbeat. tried slower for the name.. except for b part i dont really hear a lament..or at least what my mind has for one

I realize the tune phrases end in D - I just felt the A was so much stronger throughout the tune & Dmaj is the same scale as Amix - thought it might help with the feeling change in the B part... this is where my gut feelings collide with music theory, because I hear not only the A's in the tune, but the A chords & the A in all the Dmaj chords for the 'fiddle Castro' chord version.
I did find the same tune (but for accordion) on musescore - same C#, F#, but says it's in Dmaj & Bmin. You might find the chords used interesting - even some Emin & Bmin chords - works.
The 72nd Battalion Farewell to Aberdeen
You mentioned Cmaj chord for the B Part - what about F#dim (F#,A,C) for the feeling?
...just keepin' ya thinking. 😉

@elcbk To be honest, I just picked up guitar and started playing diatonic chords to D with the exception of I knew the C natural was in this measure
so I went with a C chord thinking it would place some emphasis there with the notes of chord being C,E,G. the B in that measure played with C chord would make a Cmaj7 i think. Am would work since its A,C,E. the G added would be Am7? Em E,G,B would work.. I just picked C. Use musescore and setup a backing and play to it. youll hear your favorite! Personally Im not sure about F#dim there ..something to try and just hear how it sounds.
I dont like a bunch of chord changes like in some of the examples.
Im thinking since your in D and have a C natural which is flattened 7th of D..does that make that section Dmix instead of Amix which would have flattened G? typing and thinking...may be forgetting something. I know G is flat related to key of A but going with the notated D key signature i think the important note there is C not the following G's
I for sure dont think the whole tune is in mix.. that one small section has that flavor or sound...but overall i feel this is a major tune for the sake of discussion. And its interesting!

I think Dmix would definitely be a better description of the B part - there's just as many C#'s as C naturals, but the feel is different & think you are right to act upon that.
Think it's weird most scores I've seen look to just ignore the C natural - another example. I couldn't just link the pdf view, but you can access it here: https://tunes.gfw.scot/tune.ht.....l?tune=261
As you can see, I just found another great site for Scottish tunes! Scores with midi's & pdf's! GFW

@elcbk post 107 has a link to what we will have on stands. It will be 1st tune played. I deviated some from it but felt pretty good i have the base tune in my heqd by practicing it enough to post a version. Someone brought that version in and its what everyone has so..thatll be my version. it may not be exact to original pipe tune youll find elsewhere.
I still think even the B part is major...its just that small run of notes that changes it for a bit 🤓 for me.
glad we got some mileage out that one!! gonna go on to the next...Return from Fingal..another march. Havent got it down ..it shouldnt be too bad but a couple of places I can see me pushing timing.

Hey! Thanks for getting me to play some new tunes!
I've played Fingal's Cave, but hadn't tried Fingal's Return! With my strings the way they are tuned now, I like playing the Fdor version at The Session - down an octave, but I know you don't have a choice in the matter. (lol)
How many more tunes do you have to work on before the Concert?

@elcbk thanks... I started out wanting to be light but was thinking i swung completely opposite and just went with that..lol. theres something in there that may sound like electric guitar behind all the noise that is a crunch crunch i made with the bow and added a pedal too... double stopped the chords in between guitar.
Im gonna redo about 20bpm faster cuz its ah draggin' .ill try and not be so heavy with it next time...thinking since I recorded the guitar first I got locked in to that. but if you think its light thats cool.. maybe not a total disaster then 😃 my focus was mainly getting tune down and timing which i think i did so a win on that.

@Mark thanks ! I had to put a drum track on for it so that probably helped. its a simple melody but one section has a trouble spot for me.
@elcbk yes.. tempo will be faster than that. i dont have a defined speed but it isnt what i posted. I think i had tempo on about 100 for that.. ill probably bump it up to 120 which will be in range i think.

I think this is better. Did the whole thing over and bumped up tempo to 130 and added a bit more to backing, took out the drums, pulled off the effect on the bow crunches and juat spent more time trying to mix it. The only cringe thing Im not liking RIGHT NOW lol..is at 3 seconds in i round off a note. shouldve been more crisp. think i slurred it.

MUCH better speed!
It makes a big difference.
🤔... we've talked about tunes we thought are played too fast, some are just technically challenging, but we haven't really discussed what makes a tune sound too slow - like magically we're just supposed to feel it.
I really noticed myself playing too slow when I recorded the Black Cat Jig - still buggin' me.
Okay, I'm thinking too much - GREAT PLAYING!
Enjoyed the way you mixed it, too!
Btw, did you ever get a chance to listen to the "Bus From Fingal" set from Poisoned Dwarf?
Fyi, it starts with a really nice "Return From Fingal".
