@ABitRusty  -

Here's the version/video of "O'Carolan's Welcome" I learned from and I still like it the best!

https://youtu.be/TJPkvS2p0tQ

Here's a sheet music video - arranged by "Peakfiddler" (big difference to me).

Haven't looked at this maybe since 1st of the year... ha, I've only been playing for 16 mos (lol).

Geez, I forgot - never played the slide he does and I play 2 or 3 notes/ornaments differently!

Anyway, I fell in love with it, really enjoy playing it!  Been trying to work vibrato into this (better) before I attempt to record myself.🙄

Hope you enjoy it, too!

now that is one handsome cat there..lol you always finding these..

I dont remember hearing that one..it has that part that sounds game of throne-ish doesnt it.  hows the vibrato coming along?  Ive half hearted tried a few times.  not ready yet.  I think im gonna have to sit down with someone over a few weeks (months..years..)with it and have them help.  dont know if it works that way when learning vibrato but im thinking id have to focus on that as a main part of my practice and right now  i just enjoy what im doing so the motivation hasnt grown enough.  tunes like the above..slow airs..waltzes..sure sound better with it dont they.

@ABitRusty -

I wanted vibrato as a tool in my pocket, to use where I see fit, but sure wish I would have started way earlier - it's like learning everything I've memorized all over again! Probably 60, 70 tunes if I include Christmas Carols!

It's taken me a lot of visualization, along with proprioception/kinesthesia (sense of self-movement and body position).

Smiley Broke Apart Smiley

I think Prof. William Fitzpatrick said his teachers were nagging him to learn vibrato when 1 night he had a dream he could see/feel or picture himself doing it & the next day he could!  Yeah, right.

  • I try to follow Fiddlerman's vibrato tutorials - be able to vibrate all short and long notes.
  • I also needed the visualization from another source - "knocking on a door", it's your head you're knocking.
  • Add the auditory and kinesthesia reinforcement from a great clip SharonC provided of "a couple beans/pebbles in a pill bottle to shake" - in time with a metronome

Alright, I confess I haven't been able to make myself use a metronome and I should (afraid I'll fall asleep).

  • I did use a skinny pill bottle, w/couple beans - held like the neck of my violin, then practiced shaking the bottle, or "knocking" toward the direction of my head!
  • Next, I practice with each finger on each violin string.
  • Now I'm still, slowly adding vibrato to more notes in more tunes (and some double stops).

Yes, for me this has restricted my playing - a terrible buzz-kill, but I'm starting to get more comfortable with it!

Sooner the better!  I'll forget how terrible it was to begin with and continue to make it a more natural part of my playing.

Hmm... maybe I should move this to a more suitable thread.

btw... I still have to just break away & play "Cooley's Reel", "King George IV Strathspey" or "Brenda Stubbert's Reel" - free of vibrato!

Can't forget Halloween tunes (lol).🎃

@ABitRusty -

I HAVE seen that one - remember playing the video for the Grandkids, last year!

Forgot how cute it was, though... and catchy!

Such a purrrfect way to depict the passage of time - exactly like music!

Purrrfect for October!

Thanks, Greg!

Some great tracks on this thread, particularly like the pipes, i have a friend who is learning them at the moment in liverpool. To improve my vibrato I have been playing fifths, its supposed to make vibrato and intonation better, dont know if it works though, as I dont really like recording my self playing. but i know its a necessary evil.

I have scoured this site to find any tool which allows me to delete videos or posts, cant even find an edit button, cant find any personal message program attached to the site either for some reason. any help would be appreciated.

Nice find @GregW - but - no - I can't answer your question !  Aye, I like the first tune, it's unusual ....  hmmm - I mean that in the sense of both the timing and the melody - it "surprises you" ( well, it surprised me LOL - you know - you catch a few bars and expect such-and-such to follow - anticipation - and when it's not what you expected - yeah - cool !!! )  --- stilll listening through the rest as I write !  Good stuff !

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG
