Krzysztof Penderecki
He set the violin down for a life of composing... so, not one himself, he was like a vampire that turned everyone (who could play his music) into a Wicked Fiddler (Violist & Cellist)! ...hey, it's October! (okay, maybe not Rock or Pop)
"Cadenza per Viola Sola" - Play-along Sheet Music (lol)! Katya Lazareva is the virtuosic, 'Wicked Violist' here!!!
Yeah, starts out innocently enough... (moved this here from the Intervals Thread).
I was wondering if Penderecki set out to deliberately torture Violinists, Violists & Cellists with his compositions...
Krzysztof Penderecki: “Trojan Horse of the Avant-Garde”
Unique compositions focused on 'timbre', NOT 'pitch' - "how music sounds, and how the sounds translate into what we feel".
...all started with the gift of a Violin & a growing fascination of extended string playing techniques - SO COOL!

Omg, talk about a 'wicked fiddler'...
Mari Kimura!
"Gemini Subharmonics" - Mari Kimura.
Mari also developed MUGIC®!
an easy-to-use WIFI sensor, suited to learn and teach electronic music, interactive graphics and to create sounds, control effects, change lighting parameters, generate visuals and much more. MUGIC® enables you to expand your control over your system and translate your movements into meaningful data.
Cool stuff at her YT site.
...just in time for Halloween - maybe next year(?)

Julia Kim is a Wicked Violist!!!
...really wanted to put this in the Halloween Again! Thread, but Julia is just absolutely too amazing!
You can clearly see everything she is doing - all the fingering & bowing techniques!
PLUS, she generously provided a link to her excellent arrangement - so you can print & learn it!
"Paint It Black" (from Wednesday's playing Cello) - Julia Kim playing Viola (see video link for her score)!
Oh my, plenty to keep me in the dark!
...have to start somewhere. 😵

"Unholy" (by Sam Smith & Kim Petras) is one of those tunes that ought to be a meme, because it's a real ear-worm!
Wait... is it one?
Anyway, I had to add another WICKEDLY GOOD Cellist & Violinist!
One of my favorite covers of "Unholy" is by the Brooklyn Duo - Patrick Laird (cello) & Marnie Laird (piano)! SO COOL!
I also really like what Andre Soueid (Lebanon) brings to his violin cover of "Unholy"!

Black Angels - Thirteen Images From The Dark Land
Found this unusual piece composed by George Crumb. It was commissioned by the University of Michigan (yes, my home State of Michigan DOES grow strange things 😉).
The whole piece is a 'threnody' - elegy, mourning/memorial, this one is a symbolic reference to the Vietnam war.
The cool thing... it was composed FOR ELECTRIC string quartet, but I can't find anyone who performs it on electric instruments!
Anyway, intriguing performance by a wickedly good string quartet - the Cuarteto Quiroga!
Some VERY COOL effects, but take a gander at the score!
Btw, I had to turn the volume down on this - especially at the beginning.

When it comes to Wickedly Wonderful Fiddlers, Wendy MacIsaac is on my radar!
With Roots in 19th Century Scotland, Cape Breton-Style Playing Moves into the Future - great Strings Magazine article talking about Wendy MacIsaac (and also Katy McNally).
What's WICKED is her PERFECTLY BOWED TRIPLETS (BIRLS)! ...AND her super clean articulation (both hands)!!! I first noticed her using these bowed triplets with such flair in her albums with Mary Jane Lamond, but not so much in her earlier music (hate that Cape Bretoners call it a CUT).
Wendy plays some solos on the Seinn Album that are just FABULOUS (her playing on the other tracks are GREAT, too)!
Seriously, she has me drooling!
One of my favorites: "Keeping Up With Calum"!
This reel has notation available at thesession.org!
AND... "Yellow Coat"!
It's a great set of 3 reels - not sure if they are all originals of Wendy's or not.
The 1st tune I posted, in the what is now Fiddling Types of Gaelic Songs Thread, is from another album that Wendy & Mary Jane worked together on (Stòras) - called "Mo Nighean Donn as Bòidhche". Wendy's fast tempo reel (that starts it off) is what really made me want to learn to do these triplets well (just don't know if I have enough time left on this planet 🤣).
Mary Jane says on her site:
Wendy MacIsaac made up the tune at the beginning off the top of her head in rehearsals for the CD, she’s calling it the Maynard Street Reel.
...anyway, I started practicing this before Fiddle Hell (up to where Mary Jane starts singing) - as an exercise. 😳 Taken me a while to get this going repeatedly without getting spastic & tense 🥴 - not quite up to tempo, yet! I've watched several tutorials on bowed triplets over the last couple years & know it will take time to get consistancy.

Wicked Fiddlers inspire me!
I'm overwhelmed by the passion I feel thru their playing - and overjoyed as they make me feel a groove has the energy of an amusement park ride.
'Wicked Fiddlers' are found in EVERY genre - and EVERYONE has their own favorites (evident all over this forum).
Mia Marine is another one for me. I've posted some really great videos of her playing in the Nordic threads.
Wanted to learn more from Mia Marine for quite some time, now. I'm still really busy this month, but going to be diving into her lessons starting next month. I'll be subscribing to Mia's Groovy Fiddle Academy for the next year!
