Here's what we have for Solos so far in addition to the two group performances:
@LyleA - The First Noel
@coolpinkone - O Holy Night
@wookieman - Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow.
@newfiddlergirl - O Come O Come Emmanuel
Let me know if anyone else is going to do anything. Hopefully, I saw everyone's posts. I feel like I'm missing one.

@KindaScratchy, to give you the full, more interesting, or maybe boring answer:
So there I was, browsing some fiddlerman.com threads, when it dawned on me that some of the members here were starting to prep holiday music for their recitals with whatever teacher/group they played with.
My immediate reaction was, "hey, that would be so cool! I wish I had a group of people I could play with, but I don't take lessons anywhere, and I don't know anyone else that plays either..." Then it dawned on me, "wait a second, I do know some people, I do have a teacher (if not traditional), @Fiddlerman!"
So I was thinking, well, the group project thing didn't really work out for me last time, so lets start with a poll, and see if I get any response. Obviously, I did, so I started to search for music, and now here we are.
So, basically, I know that a lot of the members here are just like me, and the only place we go to get lessons, is right here, or in a book somewhere. And I absolutely love the month of Christmas. Since I was a child, the magic of the month has brought me MUCH joy, and this is the first year that I will actually get the chance to play some Christmas tunes on an instrument. I had to do something right?!
So yes, I had the idea that we could do a group project for the Holidays. I used the term "recital," because that's really what I was going for. I think its a chance for all of us to kinda showcase what we've learned over the last year, and give a little tribute to the man that's helping so many of us in this endeavor.
With that though, I know many of us are still beginners (me especially) so I wanted to use easy songs that were JUST challenging enough for us with less than a year. Additionally, I wanted everyone else to participate, so that's why I also wanted to include solos (or duets if your twin sister wants to play) so everyone has the opportunity to showcase their growth this year AND play something that they really like.
Everything will get rolled in to one video. Even if that video is an hour long, I'll get it done (actually, the longer it is, and the more participants we have, the happier I will be).
In case you didn't read through everything, we DO have two songs selected from the same book. And if you want to throw in a solo/duet performance, I'd ask that you let us know what you'd like to play, so we can post it and others will know what songs others are playing in case they don't want to "repeat" a performance.
Hope that answers your question!

Jesse, that was cool.
I don't have the book, and will take too long to get here anyway, so I've got copies of both songs in the correct keys, and maybe I can improvise, or just leave out the bits I don't have written ... maybe.
Otherwise, I'll try to get something done. Last year I think we did God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, so maybe I can ressurrect that one and play better this year.
But it's pleasing to see such a good response. Keep it up guys!
If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

Robyn:
I have the book coming tomorrow. I always make working copies... I have no problem loaning you my book or my working copies during this time..via snail mail or electronic. There are no copy write issues with loaning a friend a book. I buy a lot of music and books full price, I have no guilt.

Hear Hear Diane! Thanks to Jesse for all the work in a project such as this.
Toni ... I think your gesture is wonderful, thank you. But 'snail mail'? It would never get here. And copyright isn't an issue with you because you've paid for the book, but for me it might be, not really sure.

Here is a link to the simplified copyright fair use laws
http://www.copyright.gov/circs.....circ21.pdf
And an excerpt from it
"
C. Fair Use
1. Text of Section 107
note: The following is a reprint of the entire text of section 107 of title 17, United States Code as amended in 1990 and 1992.
§ 107 · Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106a, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criti- cism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include —
(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work."
I would consider a copy in this case to fall under fair use for educational purposes as it has limited commercial impact (item 4) and is not for profit (item 1). When going back to college a few years back, I became intimately familiar with fair use copies during my research for my engineering degree. I hope this helps. I think you would be safe in a single copy (either paper or electronic) of a portion of the work (only the 2 songs involved refer to section 3) as long as the recipient doesn't further copy and distribute it any further or try to resell it. Please include a note that this is copyrighted material and reference the original copyright information just to be safe and legal.
Hope this helps...

@newfiddlergirl Unfortunately, the laws are different as soon as a "public performance" is introduced. In our case, this will be a "public performance." Part B of the above document, specifically notes this as well under Section 106. Because it's a public performance, it is not "fair use" even if we are not doing it "for profit." Additionally, though the laws are probably similar, @Robyn.fnq lives outside the US, so the laws are most likely slightly different.
It stinks, because we are all learning from this project, but that's one of the reasons we each need to buy our own copy, or be "gifted" one. In Robyn's case, shes good to go as I had a second copy.

My bad. There wasn't any performance part in my engineering degree so I was thinking of it solely in terms of a "learning tool". The public performance part didn't dawn over marble head.

Samantha and Jesse ... yes, thank you both for keeping that obvious, usually we don't really know unless we've made an infringement and Big Brother knocks on our door. And I've lent many people my piano books when they've got exams or performances, so I'm aware that using a copy is a big no-no.
And thank you so much Jesse, and even Toni (who offered her copy), I have had about an hour in total to practise before I head off overseas (tomorrow) for a well-earned break. I'll be back a few days before December, so hopefully that will be enough time to get my act together and seriously practise for my part.
Just a little query, slight confusion about the actual 'performance' ... are we doing both songs as a medley, or separately?
See you in the performance hall!
(Damn ... where did those Christmas smileys go?)
