A few days ago, I was wondering what I could do with violins that were laying around. I didn't want to put them in their case's, you know the old saying, "out of sight, out of mind", so I decided to make a hanger for the fiddles and the bows.

I didn't want to hang them with the conventional wall hanger because I didn't want them hanging on their tuning pegs.

For about $17.00 USD, I bought the materials and this is what I came up with. It can be made for as many violins and bows as you want.

Comment's and critisizms are welcome.

I really like that.  I like the idea of where you hang the violin from the scroll. I am going to make some for my shop. What wire did you use to make the hangers.  It looks like unfluxed brass brazing rod.

Thanks Kevin,,,,, It is 1/8" brass rod I got at Lowe's. I bent it with pliers, drilled 1/8" holes in the wood. I drilled through the Oak and had to tap the hangers in, they fit very tight so there's not a chance of coming out.

I originally bought 3/8 wood dowels for the bow pegs but that was too large so I used 1/4" dowel. I drilled about 3/4 of the way through the Oak, I used 1/2" Oak, finished it with clear laquer. I staggered the peg holes to kinda give it some sort of classy look. When I inserted the 1/4" dowels in the holes, I still had to tap the pegs in, then I put a drop of Super Glue on the end of the peg before inserting it in the hole.  Don't use too much glue, it will ooze out. I made that mistake on the first one.

Took me about 3 hours to make it, including the trip to Lowe's. But then again, I'm a carpenter / cabinet maker, so I have the tools needed.

Thanks for the nice comment and good luck.

When I bought the 1/4" dowel, I used micrometers to check the size. Label said,"Made in Malasia",, you know how that goes.

Pretty clever design.  My only thought would be to dip the brass hanger in latex or cover with fabric so there's less chance of dinging or scratching the wood.  Great job! :)

I thought of that already and wrapped one strip of electrical tape around them, only one layer thick. Couldn't get the fiddle off without having to tug on it. The brass rod is very smooth, won't damage anything.

Be carefull. There are Bulls in the China shops, then there are Swans on the ponds.

I like the design and the look of Oak. Good Job! thumbs-up When I get a chance I'm going to get the Horizontal Violin Holder in the Fiddlershop. Instead of handing like this with a tied ribbon on a nail.

WOW STIX.... that is awesome work. I bet the next one you make will look even better. Considering this the prototype, I'm thinking you might hit e-bay with these. Make a single hanger, double (Like you have now) and maybe a custom one for 3?

You gave me a good idea, but where would I put it in this big house so I would see it and use it every day...hmmmmm

You could even make one that looks 'distressed' like it's really old. Maybe use a router and do some edge work to give it that Victorian Aire about it? Oh the thoughts and ideas are endless. Make it out of Birds Eye maple to match the violin back of an instrument, or a straight grained Birch... wow... you could go BIG on these.

Very, Very nice work.thumbs-upthumbs-up

Thanks, cdennyb, but the prototype is it, there are no more. I know, I could probably make em and sell em, but that wouldn't be fair to Fiddlerman, now would it. I only made it hang my fiddles and bows on, so I thought i'd show it here to give people an idea.

You folks are too kind with your comments and I really appreciate it. I didn't know if a violin could or should be hung by the scroll, but the other day when I was in the violin shop, I saw 10K and up, hanging from a wire by the scroll so I figured it wouldn't hurt one bit. I had the idea for it a few weeks ago but i've been so busy with back and forth the different doctors, I haven't had time to mess with it.

I have prostate cancer and am scheduled for surgery on the 27th, next Monday. I'll be off here for several days after that.

Thanks again everyone for the nice comments and feedback.                           done

LOL, Fiddlestix,

You already killed a lot of my business. There is no way to save it now.rofl

But seriously, it's a nice design and idea. The orchestra I last played before moving back to the states had similar hangers backstage for our breaks and such.

Thanks for the link DragonLady. At least someone is trying to help my business.

So, Boss.... I'm thinking this is a great business opportunity for you... hook up with fiddlestix and get some made with the FM logo on them and sell them on your site... nothing like letting him 'redeem' himself for his sins against the FM store. LOL

Buy at wholesale, sell at retail... simple huh?

Build me a single from maple, I'll buy it... I'm guessing retail for $19.95 plus S/H

I guess I shouldn't have posted pictures on here. Seems that some people think i'm trying to take business from "Fiddlershop.com", that was not my intensions or anything like that. If you read what I wrote.

They are "NOT" for sale.

Nah, I think they were just teasing you (and offering suggestions if you and FM wanted to capitalize on your design). smile

Anyway, best wishes with your health issues.  I'll be thinking good thoughts for you (provided that you don't consider it creepy, of course).
