Katie L

Great job, both you and your mum.

Cherish the time playing together,  I miss not being able to play with my parents and cousin. Lots of great memories.

Mark

Master the Frog and you have mastered the bow.

Thanks Mark and Andrew.. it will be the first of many. All of my grade pieces have the piano accompaniments .. including Stary Starry Night which is one of my favourites to play. I’ll keep you posted.

I sent my mum the actual piano music today so she can look at it properly .. then she sent me a recording of Amazing Grace. I haven’t had the chance to play along tonight but did do some scales earlier .

Also been watching Daniel kurganov he has three really good vibrato videos where he rests the scroll on a shelf . Would definitely recommend just for another way to practice ! 👍

@Katie L  My violin teacher told me that her mother used to teach her students (her mother also played & taught) to put the scroll up against a wall (carefully) to practice vibrato.  Same idea--might be easier since you'd have to find a shelf that's at the right height smile

Yes it was a mission trying to find the right height but my metronome with a sock on top seems to be just about right !! I like it ! 🤭

I have actually made progress !!!! Woo !!! I think I have anyway. With my vibrato that is , nothing else but still some sort of violin progress. I had to go back into third position though. Been working on the motion, the angles and the finger pads and where they touch the string . Also been experimenting with my thumb. But I’ve managed to speed it up a lot. I know it’s third position so there is a lot of support there but I’m certain I never had that quick motion before ! And also managing to switch fingers. Trouble is .. I cannot do any of it in first position . Argh maybe just slowing and it will pick up. I’m thinking carry on the third position motion.. who knows. It maybe a different story tomorrow!!

The vibrato saga continues. Maybe it’s getting quicker maybe it’s not.

Don't know a great deal about wrist vibrato because I use arm myself, but I do know that you have got it.

In my opinion  it sounds really good, believe it or not though it gets a lot easier when you stop thinking about it, not that I am any kind of expert, but I find myself using it without realising it. It becomes automatic.

I think you have made really good progress with it, and it's sounding great you should put it into tunes more.

Cant beat a sunny day

Thank you Stringy I appreciate the advice and encouragement!

There are a few snippets of info I have come across that have really helped me. Firstly practicing in quick little burst ( Mary V has some great vibrato videos for wrist ) and concentrating in practicing fast rather than dropping the knuckle down and counting . Also practicing with the scroll resting on something the right height. I have had a few seconds here and there where I wouldn’t be able to count and to me that’s the bit of progress I’ve had so far.

I have changed the angles of my fingers but feel like I’m doing the motion much better now and how I should be but it has meant I’ve gone back to square one.

I am a bit worried how I can’t see myself being able to do this at all in first position but hopefully it will come.

Thanks for watching 👍

@Katie L  Vibrato is looking & sounding good.  You're right--3rd position is easier to get the motion started & practice.  Don't worry, 1st position will come along smile

Not much practice today only about 20 mins .

Working on  trying to bow straight as my bowing has gone seriously wonky as been practicing vibrato !! Bit difficult to concentrate on both but I’m realising I will have to if I want to progress and have a decent sounding vibrato!

Sort of happy with vibrato progress!

Sometimes yoi need to sit back and look at what you are doing and how they relate. You make good observations, Katie L and good understandings as to how they all relate.

Thanks Mouse! I found a thread from violinist. Com about the bow and vibrato working together. I’ll see if I can find it and post.

And Abitrusty I am sooooo glad you think I’m improving . I was honestly thinking last night this is a real slog and do I really want to do it ?!? Glad you think my wrist is flexible.. I feel like I press down way to hard but can’t help it !! Thanks for being positive . I will carry on.

How are you getting on with your vibrato ?
