@ kindascratchy
I think the FM has a 2012 christmas project going on and people probably have plans for the end of year, so how about the end of January?

You're right, PKY, there is definitely too much going on right now. Per the thread above, we're now looking at a deadline sometime in February. We want to make sure that Robyn can participate since this project was her idea and she'll be away through the end of January.

Hope you're planning to participate, too!

I'm sorry, but I've read through all the posts and feel just a wee confused as to the exact song version to use.  Also, I've downloaded the click track labeled "Ash-grove click" listed elsewhere in this thread;  I'd like to know if there have been any revisions.

Perhaps a last definitivetrumpet-1271 post would be welcomed to clarify the click track and song version.

thanks

Hi Annon!

We sort of put this on the back burner while folks were working on the Christmas project. Plus, it was Robyn's idea and she will be away through the end of January, so the deadline will probably be in mid-February.

Nonetheless, I'm glad that you posted here to keep the topic fresh so folks can start working on it. I was just thinking today that sometime soon maybe I would repost the sheet music and click track so people don't have to go digging for it.

I created the click track, but wasn't sure if people would think that it's too fast or too slow. Try it out and let us know what you think.

Sounds ok, but then again Im not particular.  If the music is challenging, I learn more, so I have no real preference.....timing is not as much an issue as the song version, so all I need is the correct sheet music and the tempo and I can have a video to you within a few days.  But if the deadline isnt until February, then Ill just work on something else for a while.....Im just looking to have some fun  blurry_drunk-2127

OK, I'm re-posting the sheet music and click track here so that you don't have to dig down to the start of this thread.

As I said before, if folks feel the tempo is too fast, let me know and I'll redo it at a slower pace.

Jaunty is a good word for it, Rob. :)

The descant works really nicely with the melody.

Shall we say February 15th for the deadline?

When you're ready, sprend your files to me at [email protected].

Just to clarify...there are two parts to this piece: the melody and the descant. The sheet music to each is posted above.

So, like with the other group projects, you can pick which part you want to do. Or you can do both. I'll edit everything together.

The click track includes both the melody and descant so you can hear how they work together. And, when you play along, you'll hear it, as well.

Hope that helps!

My new strings should be here in a day or 2. Between work and broken strings, I have not played in over a week. My daughter loves the tune and will probably assist my efforts when I get my violin back nursed to health.

Just posting this so that this topic floats to the top again as a gentle reminder to those who would like to participate and to bring it to the attention of new members.

See the thread above for the details, including the sheet music and click track. Again, the deadline is February 15th.

Any and all are welcome to join in the fun!

Thank you for the frequent reminders. I'm relatively new to the Forum and just noticed your Ash Grove project, and will try to join in. I wasn't familiar with what "sprend" was, but Google tells me it's a way to send a file. I presume I use the Clicktrack to give the proper timing when I record the tune, so everybody's submission will be the correct timing. I've printed out the music, so am all set now to learn the song. Thanks! (I will have to find something that I can use to record my playing and that I can then upload to the computer. Any suggestions on what folks use?)

Hi Steve, I use a normal digital camera on video mode. Put the memory card into my computer and download it to my computer. I can the spread (via google search engine) to the relevant spread account.
Sometimes the picture or sound quality isn't brilliant but hey! that can be a bonus lol

Hi Steve! Glad you're on board. This "mini" project is modeled on Fiddlerman's group projects, so it's going to work more or less the same. Just pick which part you want to do: the melody or the descant (you can do both, if you want, and send two videos), then record yourself playing along with the click track in ear (ear buds or headphone) not out loud.

You're right...the purpose of the click track is to make sure that we're all playing at the same tempo.

Regarding shooting the video, there's more than one way to skin a cat, as they say. I personally usually use a digital video camera, but, as Terry said, a digital camera in video mode works fine, too. You can also use a webcam or a smart phone.

I'm going to do the editing and can work with most standard video file formats (.avi, .wmv, .mov, .mpeg4). Just don't send the native format of whatever video editing software you might have; I might not be able to open it with my software. Instead, please export it to one of the aforementioned standard formats.

Thanks, Diane and TerryT, I'll figure out something for recording video--that will be new for me. I started on the music today and made decent progress, I think! The tempo is fine for me. I worked on both melody and descant, and these will be good practice even if I didn't plan to submit videos.

(The click track is slightly faster than the midi music, at least on my computer when I play it, and the music lags behind noticeably from about the middle on and especially at the end, but I think you said it's set to 101 tempo so I'll use my own metronome for practicing.)

Thanks!

Good catch on that click track problem, Steve! I wondered if anyone would notice. I put it together in Audacity by editing together an mp3 file of the midi that I exported from MuseScore and an mp3 file of the click that I generated on a metronome site. I specified the same BPM for both so they should be the same.

I could hear that the midi starts to lag behind the click halfway through but for the life of me I couldn't get it to perfectly align in Audacity. It's probably only off by a microsecond at the start but the gap widens as time goes on.

I might play around with it to see if I can fix that problem, and if I can, I'll post a corrected click track.

Since it's only off by a tiny bit, if I can't fix it, I hope it doesn't throw folks off too much.

Hi Diane,

OK, maybe I'm the first to play the clicktrack--I hope not, ha. It's probably OK and at least for me I will use my own metronome for practice so I won't need to run the clicktrack over and over. (It is set for 101 BPM, correct?)  I hope you won't have to try to do it over, that sounds like you already spent a lot of time on it. The basic tempo is set at the start on the clicktrack, and that's all one really needs, especially if a separate metronome is available, I'd think

Thanks for all your work on this.

Good job Diane. Thanks for being on it. If you get videos or audio files that you can't open just send them to me and I'll see if I can convert them for you. Had to get quite a few plugins and apps to open all the varying codecs sent to me.

Just an idle comment. As I work on the music I notice the revised melody version with the slurs is quite a bit harder to play (at least for me!) than the version without the slurs. Gives me a further goal to try to play the slurred version properly!
