As Fiddlestix said, the hole, gash, slit..... is normal and used to insert the soundpost properly in the violin. You could put a drop of water on it and it will probably swell up and close but I wouldn't do anything. Probably doesn't affect the sound though there is a German violin adjuster that goes around to professional orchestras and charges thousands just to make adjustments and fitting new posts without the slit. :)

@Schaick ,

It's amazing what a different feel the song has with the drones in the alternate tuning - thanks for sharing that!

@Fiddlerman @Fiddlestix After hours of googling and looking at the violin I found something stuck in the f-holes. I rubbed it a lot and there you go; all the buzzing is gone.banana

Thanks for your help.

@Fidelestre  Thanks!  Something interesting I discovered - the tuning even affects the tone when the drones aren't played.  The first 2 times through the song were on Berty and the last one with the drones was on the Traveler.

@Schaick -  I loved your second submission as well.    Isn't  it fun to have a violin sitting in the DDAD tuning?  Kinda Handy... I need to get my Smoke on the Water going again.   I love that DDAD tuning.. so basically you play the regular sheet and drone the whole song right?

Good job.. Good sounds.. thanks for another submission!!!!

If I am seeing things correctly... WE HAVE 27 Submissions  in 18 DAYS!!!!!!

Congratulations Violinist, Fiddlers, and Violists.... Mandos?... Harps?  Banjos?

Keep the songs coming all.

Cheers Toni

Awesome party @coolpinkone !!  Yep, I need a second fiddle for sure!!

For that song yes.  If you play notes on the altered strings you need to adjust your fingering. For example to get E you finger F#, A becomes B.   A bit confusing for me when trying to play fluidly!!

Great party Toni ( or is that Pinky La Cool ? ) !  Since this is currently a fairly active thread with lots of posts and contributors,  I thought I would cross post a link to the International Talk Like a Pirate day 2015 thread just to bring it to folks' attention - we have around 60 days to submit something ! https://fiddlerman.com/forum/s.....ject-2015/

@LindaMc ,

Nicely done! You kept a great tone when going down to the low notes (words "all my"), which is something I find quite challenging.

thumbs-upthumbs-upthumbs-upthumbs-up

This is a great party, Toni @coolpinkone and it's still going strong. I'm going to try to do another tune sometime this week.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

And here we have Scotland The Brave on EV (imagine it is being played on the bagpipes)....  Haven't practiced it much (probably not even 50 times played yet, so I don't by any means "own it" yet) - and sure - it deviates from the sheet because.... well, just because...  LOL !

Nice job, BillyG , even though I'm not particularly fond of eviolins and a little improv at the end.  clapclap

LOL Ken!  Thank you!  I do know what you mean though!  I feel the EV "has its place" and on well known traditional songs like that, especially as a solo instrument, it can sound, well, unexpected I guess, to say the least.

I have a recurring problem with this, because I hear tunes/songs like these in my head - and the "internalization" I have of this particular one is of a massed pipe-band, with drum rolls in the B part, and the band drum-major leading the band, twirling-and-birling the mace ( hence my approach to playing the B part - I just cannot avoid it ! LOL )

But it's all good fun !

LOL - thanks CPO - but the thanks for the sound itself surely go to the Boss ME-80 guitar FX box really ! LOL

Seriously though - great fun - it was the "wrong one" to pick from FM's sheets ( for the same reason many are ) - I have my own "internalization" of many of these pieces - and not being a "true sheet reader" I just go off on my own, and (sometimes unintentionally) bring things into it that represent "what I hear in my head" kind of thing.....    To some extent, I guess that's OK for soloing, not much use for playing with others though...   it can also "be unsettling" to the listener if there are a couple of extra bars where I'm filling in a "drum roll" so to speak...  weird, weird... I just do not know what happens in my head...  I'm a lost boy - and I blame http://www.fiddlerman.com !

@BillyG Lost boy.. LOLOL

Your mind and fingers "fill in the drum roll."  I see.. well that's cool. It is probably why you always seem to be enjoying your self.

Keep playing great tunes for us Bill... it is a joy to see and hear you play.  You have such enthusiasm.  If there was every a badge for motivation and enthusiasm... I nominate you!!!

Cheers Buddy!

PS>>> I want all the details of the 5 string when you take the plunge..... I saw several in the style we talked about.. natural, green, black... shhhhhhh.. I won't say a word...

LOL Pinky La Cool - it's the traditional Fender head-stock that gets me on the 5-string yinfente... let alone the RIDICULOUSLY cheap price for anyone who cares to do a bit of "homework" on it and make it sing....  the color and its looks, etc, is, to me, unimportant LOLOL ( artistic philistine here - well - no - not really - of course I do "know what I like" - but like my old pal Herman the viol-ola who should have been consigned to the scrap heap years ago - I see value in all ( well, most ) things....)

 I have a similar idea for a very unique EV ( and I have the bits I need - just don't know if I am actually going to spend the time to do the work ) for my "maple-wood-pick-axe-handle fiddle" I am planning to make...  that will have the guitar-style machine-head tuners/tensioners - a bit like a guitar and what Denny's yinfente has ( I don't mean the traditional Fender head-stock shape - just referring to the tensioners themselves) - but they will be down at the chin-rest end, rather than the nut .  So far, I have it measured out, but - I really do need to find someone with a woodworking lathe to reduce what will become the neck overall diameter....  hmmm  -  I'm beginning to suspect this is a project that may just be left till next year - I just have TOO MANY DARNED TSONGS TO  LEARN AND TO PLAY ....  grrrrrrrrrr... LOL
