Small step for Pky. A giant leap for fiddlers. Right pinky on the stick - following Fiddlerman's instructions. Ver good. It appears to me, but Fiddlerman is the best judge, that your bow is a bit tight. Your left pinky does not appear to be short. Your journey has started with a bang. Looking forward to more videos from you and others as well. I will join when I am ready with a video.

Great Job! Now you are brave! (you said Robyn and I are brave)
One thing I think about when bowing is my upper arm only moves to change strings. My lower arm plays the notes. It's like a union job thing. I ask my upper arm to play a note, it is supposed to say, "Not my job". Most of your notes were very clear and steady, not easy to do. I think your pinky is going to be fine. Just keep using it, it will get stronger and it will get easier to put it where it needs to be. Thank you for not doing the headless thing. Keep up the good work!

Very nice long upbows, Pky! That's not an easy skill to master, but you're doing just fine! Your pinky looks fine with the 4/4 fiddle and you keep your fingers close to the strings. Good job! Hope to see more soon
The YouTube video is too wide for the screen on the forum, but if you click on it, and then on the username at upper left it will take you to YouTube where you can view it full screen and her left hand isn't cut off.
Also - does no one else use tapes on their fingerboard? Just me? How do you all remember where to put your fingers to get the right note?

Tapes? You have heard me play right? Cap'n Misintonation at your service...lol!
LOL! I was just wondering what the general view here is - are tapes a crutch, or a valuable learning tool? I'm just learning to look at something other than my left hand while playing, so I haven't outgrown the tapes yet...

I haven't used any type of tape for finger positions. One of the first things that sticks in my head before I even picked up a fiddle is one of Fiddlermans lessons about really hearing the right note on a scale by ear. Do it over and over though to in-tune notes to compare too. I keep going over the first position natural scales that are offered here then you get an understanding of sharps and flats a bit better. It's just seven modes to any western scale. One thing that I would recommend as an adult beginner on violin is experiment with the other positions of the violin right away. Our hands are no longer going to grow bigger. So our hands are ready now…

Interesting that people are discussing tapes. I started off without them, thinking I'd know by ear where to put my fingers. WRONG. I still use them. I play scales in my warm up each day without looking, but when I'm playing something, occasionally I need to know by sight where to put my finger. I was wondering the other day when I'll grow out of that crutch.
If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

Why was I able to see your left hand this time but not the first?
I noticed it, too – the right side of video is not showing, on other people's
video as well if you watch it within this forum, if you copy the link and watch
it on youtube (or, do what Cat suggested) then you can see the whole screen; I think it is because the size of the frame of the forum is set smaller than the youtube frame. i have tried to reset it (I thought it was a problem from my end) but did not succeed.

How long have you been playing now?
I've been playing for five weeks.
Thank you all for you constructive, encouraging, and motivating advice. I will work on making it better. Posting a video here and getting critiques from you all help me see what I don’t see (or see but ignore/not notice) in a mirror (or watching my daughter plays, she moves her upper arm, too!) i have to admit though, i was nervous when I first posted it.
when I reminded myself to use my lower arm to play the notes I could do better, but the finger placement to get the right intonation is very hard for me. I tried and tried and decided to put tape down (which I was very reluctant to do so because I want to learn to play the notes right by ears and my finger muscle, not the tape). i noticed that I really have to twist my whole arm to get the C and D on G string, yet, my pinky could hardly reach D on G string.
To be honest, I should really practice scales and natural notes — start from the beginning. I shouldn't run when i can't wallk well yet. I will practice scales and natural notes and will keep you posted for my progress.

Yes, five weeks and she has that amount of expertise already. I don't think anyone can criticise the level of work that's obviously gone into pky's video, and to be brave enough to post it for us to see.
I also think it's a credit to this site that everyone has posted constructive, helpful and friendly comments. We all rock!
